A housekeeper poisons the mother-in-law, the husband kills her, and the wife starts over.
Daphne trades modest means for luxury when she marries Wesley, but the arrival of his sponsored student Elsie as housekeeper shatters the peace. Elsie wears kindness like a costume while she systematically erodes Daphne's marriage and finally slips poison to Wesley's mother Catherine. The murder forces Wesley to execute Elsie himself, landing him in prison. With the marriage dissolved, Daphne walks away from the wreckage to build a career and a new life on her own terms.
